Caprisun - A conversation on Das Archipel

with Rabea (age 28), White (age 7), Simon (age 10) und Nuriye (age 28). recorded in May, 2017

N: And what are you up to here on the Archipel?
W: Well we’re here…
S: to enjoy some free time.
W: We also come here when it rains, because of the roof. The bridge broke because a few of our friends, Dominik and Justin, took that metal pole and bashed it in…We thought that was bad and said “knock it off!” but they didn’t listen.
N: Seems like they were in the mood for destruction…
W: Yeah, we ran off because we thought the police would come and think we did it.
N: (Laughing) Very good!
W: The next day the bridge had completely fallen apart, Simon and I walked across it fell into the water.
S: Right there! (Pointing towards the site)
W: We thought it was nice since it was so hot — refreshing!
N: (Laughing) Then it wasn’t so bad that you got wet?
W: No, we fall in quite often.
R: What other nice things can one do on the Archipel?
W: Well, for example one could (pointing towards another site) build a slide directly into the water, and then clean the water there. And once everyone comes to swim have some drinks.
R: What kind of drinks?
S: Cola.
W: Ice Tea.
S: Juice boxes, Fanta…
W: Beer for the adults.
R: But first for the kids?
S: Caprisun! Fruity stuff!
R: Fruity stuff! With ice cubes?
S: And then we could (pointing to the water) make a small pool for kids here, and a bigger one over there for those with silver or bronze that can already swim.
R. And maybe we could offer swimming lessons for those who can’t yet swim.
S: A swimming club!
(...)
R: So do you think you could imagine starting a swimming club? I mean you are already great swimmers…
S: Yes, he (White) has silver, and so do I.
(...)
W: But for free!
S: I am the second best swimmer in the group for the crawl!
W: Listen, I’m telling you, you should offer it for free, so that everyone has a chance to learn how to swim. Because not everyone can afford it. Some swimming pools offer three-day lessons for 20€, and others charge 100€ a month!
W: We should have different schedules for the kids that are busy on different days. If a kid has no time on Monday, then he could just come on Tuesday. On Monday, when the others are working towards their silver, the kid can come alone on Tuesdays and work on silver at his own pace. We’ll of course have someone takes care of that, even when the kids are just playing around…
R: And what other kind of things could you imagine to offer?
S: We could have a whirlpool machine for the older men that would most likely come here to chill.
R: But what about for you? What else could you offer other people?
S: Well, I’m good at fishing!
R: Aha! A fishing club?
S: Fishing club… we could also have a rowing club…but maybe that would be too much…
W: I’m a good singer.
R: Aha, that’s also cool, because you don’t need mich for that — just yourself!
S: Or drumming!
W: For the people with a musical heart!
S: A band!
R: An Archipel-band!
W: An Archipel-band, we could have different groups of kids, each making their own unique music. Some will play drums, others bass…and the rest could play instruments that have something to do with wind.
R: Yes great! (...) White, can you sing for us?
W: Yes, but this is just for you.
(White sings a song in Spanish)
S: Very cool. Even though I don’t understand it, I think its cool!
R: Thanks! That was nice! Simon, are you up to start a band?
S: Sure, or we can start a rowing club. We could ask my dad, he’s good with wood. R: Is he a carpenter?
S: Yep, we could ask him if he could bring us some wood, and together build a long canoe, and then take it for a tour.
W: Yeah, and since that involves building, we can give the kids work gloves and nails… S: Circular saws!
W: ... and then they could build whatever they want — of course with permission from their parents. The first day we would think up a plan of what we could build, and after we built that, we could decide what we do on the next day. For example we could think about building a wooden sword for the little kids, and on the next day we could play a game who can survive the longest.
S: Or we could make a flowerbed…in general it ought be more colorful.
